FRANKFORT, Ky. — Humane Society of the United States wants a crackdown on cockfighting in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
An undercover video that shows a uniformed Kentucky State Police trooper at a cockfight in southeastern Kentucky was released to the media by the Humane Society of the United States.
The Humane Society of the United States released the video at a news conference at the state Capitol on Tuesday. It shows the unidentified trooper standing among spectators while roosters attacked one another in an arena near Manchester, Ky.
The video was shot in January 2009 and February 2010 near Manchester, Ky. It shows a trooper and a constable present at the event and shows children playing with the fighting birds.
Cockfighting is a misdemeanor in Kentucky, punishable by up to a year in jail.
State police had no immediate comment about the video.
Legislation in the form of House bill 169 is moving through Frankfort that would make cockfighting a felony in Kentucky.
