Bomb kills one at Afghan cockfight: police
KUNDUZ, Afghanistan — At least one person was killed when a bomb exploded at a cockfight in northern Afghanistan early Saturday, police said, blaming Taliban insurgents.
Dozens of people were at the fight in Kunduz province when the remote-controlled bomb exploded, provincial police chief Mohammad Razaq Yaqoubi told AFP.
One person was wounded in addition to the fatality.
No one has claimed responsibility, but Yaqoubi blamed the Taliban, who banned all forms of gambling, along with music, movies and television, during their oppressive six-year rule of Afghanistan.
The militants have waged a bloody insurgency against Afghan and international forces since their ouster in a US-led invasion in 2001.
NATO and the United States are deploying thousands of extra soldiers in a strategy designed to bring a swift end to the conflict, with foreign troop numbers in Afghanistan expected to peak at 150,000 in August.
Most are deploying to the south, where NATO said insurgents killed one foreign soldier on Friday, bringing to 185 the number of foreign soldiers who have died this year as a result of the war, according to an AFP count based on the independent icasualties.org website.
