Let’s bring back cock fighting too

FUENTE: INDEPENDENT.IE

It WAS wonderful to hear the case for rural pursuits being advocated so strongly yesterday by the Healy-Raes in their opposition to the Wildlife Bill.

If the bill is defeated it opens the door for the resurrection of other healthy, rural pursuits with a long tradition in Ireland.

These include such fun activities as bull baiting, badger baiting, dog fighting and cock fighting.

My one concern is that similar traditional urban pursuits might get ignored in this upsurge of interest in our country activities. A good example is the long tradition at Halloween of attaching fireworks to animals’ tails, galloping horses through fires and throwing cats on bonfires.

It could also introduce to Ireland in this multi-cultural age activities with a long tradition in other countries, such as the Spanish tradition of throwing live goats off church towers.

While we are at it, why not bring back hanging, flogging and the burning of witches — which all have a long history in Ireland?
